Prof. T. Shivaji Rao a renowned Environmentalist and Distinguished Scientist was instrumental in establishing the department in 1995. It now offers Bachelor’s programme in Environmental Management (BEM) and M.Sc in Environmental Science. The two programmes were started under innovative programmes of UGC. From the beginning, the department has pioneered in imparting skills to the students in the areas of Applied Ecology, Environmental Pollution and Management with global, regional and local perspectives. M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes are also on offer. The Teaching-learning process is woven around field work, industrial visits, awareness seminars and project works apart from generic theoretical issues.
The department is well endowed with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment to support effective teaching-learning process. Department is supported with Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Higher Educational Institutions (FIST)-DST Level-1.The equipment also aids research in the areas of Phytoremediation, Biodegradation studies, Trace element geochemistry and waste water treatment etc. The faculty has been active in undertaking research projects funded by National University of Singapore(NUS), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF), UGC, DST, NTPC, BARC and other agencies. The faculty has published 105 research papers in reputed journals during the last five years. Besides 06 research projects are currently in progress, while complete 07 research projects during the last 5 years. The department has been undertaking consultancy works for industries within Andhra Pradesh and made a mark. Our clients are National Thermal Power corporation, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Larsen & Toubro etc.,
The department also takes proactive role in conducting Environmental Awareness Programmes on various environmental issues among general public, student community and industrial employees. The department has organized seminars and workshops like Climate Change and Sustainable Water Resources (CCWR), Sustainable Environmental Practices in Education Sector, Environmental Health, Climate change, solid waste management, Biodiversity for sustainable management, Water – Elixir of life and Environmental education etc. in association with Ministry of Environment of Forest, A.P. Pollution Control Board and Industries etc. Department has organized Winter School on“Geospatial Technologies – Application to Science and engineering Research” (GEOSTAP - 2015) funded by NRDMS Division,DST.Apart from this student from the department are actively engaged in creating environmental awareness through rallies, distribution of clay idols and associating with NGO’s towards sustainable environmental practices.
