About department

Responding to the growing potential for employment and research in the field of Biotechnology, a two year M.Sc. course in Biotechnology was started from the academic year 1997-98. Later, five year M.Sc. Integrated Biotechnology programme has been started from the academic year 2008-09. Ph.D.and M.Phill. Programmes are also being offered from the academic year 2007-08.

The department has excellent infrastructure facilities like audio visual class rooms and well equipped spacious laboratories with state of the art equipment for conducting teaching learning process and research in the frontier areas of Biotechnology such as Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology,Medical Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering. A separate Research lab is established for the benefit of research scholars and faculty.

Our innovative teaching methodology and extensive wet lab practical training with emphasis on hands on training in basic and advanced techniques, enable the students to qualify UGC- CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET), DBT, ICMR, GATE, IARI tests as well as get recruited by reputed Biotech, Pharma, Healthcare, Chemical, Aqua and Agriculture, food industries and software companies. Our students are also pursuing research in reputed research / academic institutions in India and abroad.

The department has identified Plant biotechnology, Bioactive compoundsand Seribiotechnology as thrust areas of research. Currently 12 research projects worth of about two crores funded by DBT, DST, UGC and BARC (BRNS) are in progress. The faculty has published about 160 research papers in reputed journals. The faculty has published about 160 research papers in reputed journals like Nature Scientific reports, Hematology Oncology stem cell therapy, Nature communications, PLOS pathogens, BBA proteins and proteomics, Anti cancer agents in medicinal chemistry, Plant cell reports and Plant Cell. The department average impact factor is 2.5, citations are 50, H-index is 5.0, and i10 index is 2.0. The Department is also supported by DST – FIST (Fund for improvement of Science and Technology). So far 18 Ph.D. degrees were awarded from this department and at present 20 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. programmes.

The department organizes national and international seminars / workshops and guest lectures regularly which will benefit the students to interact with renowned scientists/ academicians. Our alumni are well placed in reputed institutions, industry and university in India and abroad.
