Established in 2001, the Department of Biochemistry and Bioinformatics offers M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics. The curricula of M.Sc. programs are designed covering basics to advanced aspects imparting hands on experience in the respective fields to cater the needs of industry and research organizations.
The department has excellent infrastructure facilities like audio visual class rooms and well equipped spacious laboratories with state of the art equipment for an effective teaching learning process and research. The teaching-learning process is woven around project works, seminars, field work and industrial visits apart from generic theoretical issues. Our innovative teaching methodology and extensive wet lab practical training enable the students to qualify in CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET), ICMR, GATE, IARI, BioInformatics National Certification (BINC) Examinations etc.,
The placement record has been impressive with students joining reputed institutions like Bioserve, National Institute of Nutrition, Indian Immunologicals, ICMR, Dr. Reddys’ laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma, Institute of Life Sciences. A significant number of students are pursuing higher studies in advanced research institutions both in India and abroad.
The research areas of Biochemistry include Enzymology, Immunology, Plant biotechnology, Clinical biochemistry, Fungal biology and Cancer biology with bioactive compounds from medicinal plants and marine sources as thrust area. Faculty is also working on silencing of novel target genes using small interfering RNA (siRNA) in breast and brain cancers. The research areas of Bioinformatics include Structural bioinformatics, Drug designing and Evolutionary bioinformatics with emphasis on drug designing.
Two major and six minor research projects funded by DST, UGC and GITAM were completed. Nine major research projects funded by UGC, DBT, DST, DRDO and ICMR worth Rs ~ 2 crores are in progress. Presently, 9 research fellows are working in these projects and a post doctoral fellow (PDF) funded by UGC. The faculty published 154 research papers in reputed national and international journals with an average impact factor of 2.59 and 15 Ph.D. and one M.Phil. degrees were awarded from the department. Presently, 22 students for Ph.D. and 2 for M.Phil. are on rolls.
